In 2009, the 9/11 School Recovery Program published, “How We Healed”, a review of the many programs and people who came together to assist lower Manhattan schools, students, teachers and social workers after September 11th. Feel the Music! was honored to be able to provide after-school workshops in percussion and songwriting to students in several schools
The frog project continues! Feel the Music! families hand-painted a second batch of percussion frogs and we sent them to an army hospital in Iraq. These hand painted “Feel the Music!” frogs provided much needed moments of joy to dozens of soldiers. What brought tears to our eyes was learning the soldiers, once out of the hospital, are giving their frogs to Iraqi children.
What started as a chance meeting between three Valerie’s turned into a bi-coastal fundraiser between Archbishop Riordan High School and New York’s Feel The Music, part of the World Foundation for Music and Healing.
The frog is an unlikely symbol of recovery, resilience and compassion. Yet for families who lost loved ones on September 11th, in the 2004 Madrid bombings, and for families left devastated by Hurricane Katrina, the humble frog became a gentle reminder that others “care about us and share our sorrow.”

May 30, 2007, a new educational DVD, created by The Discovery Education Network in 2007, includes a beautiful and moving 8 minute segment about the Feel the Music! program and the teen outreach group, Hope to Cope. This educational DVD was sent to teachers and schools all over the country. Watch this space, the whole segment will be online soon!
